The new Fisheries Information Management System (FIMS) was launched during a short ceremony at the Savoy Resort and Spa yesterday by the Minister for Fisheries and The Blue Economy. The software was developed by international consultants from TraSeable Solutions under the project management of the Statistics and Economics department over the course of 9 months.
The new software will have the following key functionalities:
- View and access fishing vessels details and who is authorized to conduct fishing and related activities in Seychelles territory, sovereign rights and beyond national zones.
- Explore how each fishery is being managed, what data is being collected, the status of different species stocks, and what research and projects are being implemented.
- Find out the volume and value of fish and fish products being exported and imported and to which international markets, revenue collected and volume and value of concessions in the fisheries sector
- Learn about the different monitoring, control and surveillance activities by SFA to ensure compliance with national and international fisheries-related laws and regulations.
The development of FIMS featured many internal and external stakeholder consultations and validation workshops as a way to ensure that the right datasets were being collected and fit the end-users needs. When launching the FIMS, the Minister for Fisheries stressed on the importance of data in the industry and of his appreciation for the team who managed to put together an efficient system in such a timely manner. He also highlighted the importance of transparency and fact that stakeholders, especially the general public would be able to access the data on FIMS.
