Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso is a medical practitioner and the appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, University of Lagos Nigeria, (UNILAG). He was the Chairman, Senate Committee on Health in the 8th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He has been championing the enhancement of the health sector of Nigeria and during his tenure, introduced various Bills including the amendment of the National Health Insurance Scheme to guarantee affordable, accessible and quality health care and; also the establishment of functional cancer management centres all over the country.
Senator Dr Tejuoso was also at the forefront of the campaign for adequate funding for the improvement of the nutrition budget to ensure the reversal of very high malnourishment indices of our infants and children. His efforts in Nigeria were recognized by various international partners including the World Bank, UNICEF, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. His Committee hosted the first nutrition policy dialogue in Nigeria that translated to the injection of $250 million to the nutrition budget of Nigeria and he became a founding member of the Parliamentarian Group for Nutrition in Africa. He introduced the Legislative Network for Universal Health Coverage in Nigeria, bringing together all the chairmen of health and appropriation committees of State Legislative Assemblies for the first time, for coordinated health interventions in the country.
Over the course of his term at the Senate, he sponsored among others the:
- Pharmacists Council of Nigeria Act (Amendment) Bill, 2016
- An act to amend the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act Cap M8 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and Other Related Matters, 2016
- An act to repeal the National Health Insurance Scheme and enactment of the National Health Insurance Commission Bill.
The National Health Insurance Commission Bill would ensure mandatory contribution of all Nigerians resident in Nigeria, to the health insurance fund and further translate to huge improvement of health financing in the country. He additionally championed the implementation of the National Health Act 2014 ensuring that a minimum of 1% of the consolidated revenue fund of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was included in annual health budgets.
Prior to service at the federal level, Senator Tejuoso served in the cabinet of Ogun State Government from 2011 to 2015 variously as Commissioner in the State Ministry of Special Duties, administering Ministry of Power and Water Resources, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Youth and Sports. His political career commenced in 2006 when he joined President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, in the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). As a ranking member of CPC, Senator Tejuoso was made the Chairman of the National Convention Committee of the party in 2011.
