In a significant step towards strengthening public health systems, Kano State Governor, His Excellency Abba Kabir Yusuf, has signed the Kano State Public Health Emergency Law. This landmark legislation positions Kano as a leader in public health preparedness and response within Nigeria.
The journey to enacting this vital law involved a collaborative effort between the Kano State Government, the State House of Assembly, and key partners, including the Legislative Initiative for Sustainable Development (LISDEL), the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL), and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Lafiya Project. These partners played a crucial role in advocating for the law and providing technical support to ensure its alignment with international best practices, including the International Health Regulation (IHR).
The law’s passage was not without its challenges. Despite initial approval during the 9th Assembly, the process faced setbacks. However, through sustained advocacy efforts by partners and renewed commitment from the 10th Assembly, the bill regained momentum. Notably, Governor Yusuf himself, during an interactive session with CSOs facilitated by LISDEL before the gubernatorial elections, pledged his commitment to strengthening the state’s public health security architecture if elected as governor.
The Kano State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, demonstrated unwavering support for the bill’s advancement. Following its passage by the Assembly on February 27, 2024, the Governor’s assent marks a significant milestone in this collaborative effort.
This new law underscores Kano State’s dedication to safeguarding the health and well-being of its citizens. It serves as a model for other states in Nigeria to prioritize public health preparedness and response, ensuring the state is better equipped to address future health emergencies effectively.
