FG, Siemens Sign Deal to Boost Cancer Care in Nigeria

In a significant stride toward advancing healthcare, the Federal Government of Nigeria has signed a landmark agreement with Siemens Healthineers to purchase state-of-the-art oncology equipment, marking a transformative step for cancer care in the nation.

The agreement, supervised by Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, is part of an extensive plan to equip six major oncology centers across Nigeria.

“This partnership is not just about acquiring equipment; it represents a crucial public-private alignment to address one of the most pressing health needs in our country,” Prof. Pate stated during the signing ceremony.

The deal was facilitated by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), underscoring the government’s commitment to comprehensive healthcare reforms under the National Health Sector Reform Initiative (NHSRII).

In statement by Senior Special Assistant on Media and External Relations to the minister Tashikalmah Hallah, Prof. Pate emphasized that the project, which is expected to have its first facilities operational by May 2025, signals a new era in cancer treatment.

“For the first time, we are investing in a nationwide cancer treatment infrastructure that meets international standards,” he added. The initiative promises a significant improvement in the availability and quality of cancer care for patients across Nigeria.

Alongside equipment procurement, the agreement includes a robust training program for healthcare personnel, ensuring that local professionals are ready to provide effective treatment from day one. “This approach combines cutting-edge technology with a capable, well-trained workforce, empowering our healthcare system to deliver timely, quality care,” Pate said, highlighting the initiative’s focus on sustainability.

NSIA’s Managing Director, Dr. Aminu Umar-Sadiq, called the agreement a “huge win for Nigeria,” noting that Siemens Healthineers granted a 30% discount on the equipment.

“This is a long-term commitment that reflects Siemens’ dedication to supporting Nigeria’s healthcare transformation,” Umar-Sadiq explained, adding that the discount applies to all purchases made until 2025.

The Vice President and Zone Head for the Middle East and Africa at Siemens Healthineers, Ashok Kakkar echoed this sentiment. “We are proud to support Nigeria’s journey toward a resilient healthcare system, and this partnership is a testament to our commitment,” he remarked.

Under the agreement, Siemens Healthineers has committed to maintaining fixed pricing for the equipment over the transaction period. This stability, combined with a reduction in costs, will allow Nigeria to maximize its investment in healthcare while expanding access to advanced cancer treatment for a broader patient population.

The project aligns with the government’s broader strategy of building resilient healthcare infrastructure capable of addressing Nigeria’s unique health challenges. By strengthening oncology services, the country hopes to reduce the need for patients to seek care abroad, thus making high-quality treatment accessible domestically.

Prof Pate said this partnership embodies Mr. President’s vision for a healthcare system that serves all Nigerians with excellence. “This monumental investment demonstrates a proactive approach to healthcare that will enhance the quality of life for countless families across the country”.
