FG Secures $198,000 Grants From CCAC To Combat Climate Change

The Federal Government of Nigeria has successfully secured $198,175 in grants from the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) to address the pressing issue of climate change. The primary focus of this initiative is to curtail open-field burning practices among farmers.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Temitope Fashedemi, highlighted the objectives of the 18-month project:

Reducing Short-Lived Carbon Emissions: The project aims to reduce short-lived carbon emissions from agricultural waste. These emissions contribute significantly to climate change.

Enhancing Adaptive Capacity: By replacing open-field burning with clean alternatives, such as conservation agriculture and briquette making, the project seeks to increase the adaptive capacity of farmers.

Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs), which include pollutants from open burning, have adverse effects on human health, agriculture, and ecosystems. Nigeria’s commitment to mitigating climate change is commendable, as it recognizes the importance of addressing these pollutants.

The project will be implemented in Gboko, Benue state, targeting 500 farmers, 35 extension officers, and key influencers from other local government areas and states. By restricting open-field burning practices, Nigeria takes a significant step toward a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.
