The Federal Government has leased the Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina State, to Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University (UMYU) for the conduct of clinicals by its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students.
Mamman said the development was made possible after management of UMYU in collaboration with some elders in the state, met with the Minster of Health in Abuja, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the lease.
“We worked with the elders of Katsina to go to the Minister and sign a Memorandum of Understanding in the first instance, where it was agreed that the hospital is going to be released to us for the next 15 years.
“Later on, there were some agitations from FUDMA seeking to use FMC, so, we had to go to Abuja to perfect the agreement. This development brought about the idea of upgrading FMC to a teaching hospital,” Mamman said.
He said the hospital would cater for the clinicals need of its pioneer set of MBBS students who have since commenced registration and are to start lectures in the institution’s newly established College of Medical Sciences.
In addition to reviving the college, Mamman said management of UMYU had been able to attract the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Company (NDIC) to construct 18 self-contained hostels for use by the medical students.
He said NDIC had assured that the facility would be ultra-modern, and the hostel will be completed by end of January next year.
