The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres on Tuesday arrived in Nigeria on a two-day mission with his aircraft landing at the Maiduguri International Airport.
He was received on arrival by the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum.
Initially, he was billed to visit Banki, a border town with the Cameroun Republic to see IDPs, but the trip was cancelled for undisclosed reasons.
He will also participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the UN House in Abuja in honour of victims of the 2011 bomb blast on the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attack
Guterres, who was accompanied by the host Governor Babagana Zulum later arrived at Government House Maiduguri where he had a brief close door meeting with the governor before attending the official courtesy call that was followed by a brief press briefing.
“The fact that I came to Borno state is symbolic of our priority to fight terrorism in the world and to create solutions for the victims of terrorism,” he said.
He said a substantial part of what he used to read during his time as UN High Commissioner on Refugees “was a Borno state of terrorism, displacement and violence.”
