NIGCOMSAT Pledges to Expand Rural Broadband Access Through Satellite Technology

The Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd. (NIGCOMSAT) has reaffirmed its commitment to furthering broadband penetration in rural and underserved areas of Nigeria by leveraging satellite technology.
The newly appointed Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, made this commitment during a media briefing following a visit to the organization’s hub and office in Lagos.
Egerton-Idehen emphasized that NIGCOMSAT is fully aware of the evolving technology landscape and, as an infrastructure provider, is dedicated to increasing its efforts to reach underserved regions.
She also highlighted the agency’s determination to stay relevant by continually innovating ideas and technologies that benefit the nation. NIGCOMSAT is strategically aligned with the Federal Government’s vision of establishing a robust digital economy, focusing on five critical pillars.
The Managing Director pointed out that the Federal Government recognizes the pivotal role of NIGCOMSAT in expanding access and enhancing communication capabilities, especially for underserved and unserved populations.
Egerton-Idehen expressed optimism about forming partnerships with both public and private sectors to drive strategic innovation and foster collaboration among key industry players.
She called upon critical stakeholders to support NIGCOMSAT, which is Nigeria’s premier communications satellite operator and one of the few in Africa.
NIGCOMSAT Ltd owns and operates the Nigerian Communications Satellite systems. The NigComSat-1R system is designed to provide domestic and international satellite services, enabling two-way satellite communications across West, Central, South, and East Africa, Europe, and Asia.
According to the latest report from the Nigerian Communication Commission, broadband penetration (BP) reached 47.36% by December 2022, representing the total number of active 3G, 4G, and 5G subscriptions. The federal government aims to achieve a 70% broadband penetration rate by 2025.
